Hello!!
Today we did another tour. We had the whole tour to ourselves again!! It was a very foggy morning but as we drove south towards the ruins of Ephesus it became a lovely sunny day!!
Our first stop was the house of the virgin Mary, where Mary supposedly visited when Jesus was being crucified. There is a fountain here that people believe has water that cures miracles. Next we drove to Ephesus, which is a 3rd century BC town that has been excavated by the Austrians and reassembled as much as can be. It was really interesting to walk through the ruins assembled similarly to how they were in ancient times!!!
Next we went to a tile manufacturer which showed and explained to us how ceramics with the iznik print are made in turkey.
Next we went to a carpet making school in Selcuk that the Turkish government fund. Students are taught for 2.5 years to become masters of carpet making. We saw how the carpets are made and how silk for the carpets is extracted! Some of the carpets there are so intricate they took 4 years to make!! Here we also had a delicious Turkish lunch. My stomach ache has started to improve (seems to happen every time I go overseas) so I was able to enjoy it!!
Finally we stopped at the site where the temple of Artemis once stood. This is one of the seven ancient wonders of the world. It was very sunny and peaceful.
All in all another interesting, educational and great day!
Flying to Athens tomorrow but then going to Olimpia before we return to Athens!
Love to all
Claire
