Ferry to Weggis, cable car and train up mt Rigi, glacier garden, lion monument

Grüzie everyone! (Apparently that's hello in Swiss German!)

This morning we caught the ferry across lake Lucerne to Weggis. It wasn't sunny today but this morning while on the boat it was still very bright! Must have snowed in the mountains overnight, they were heaps whiter today! It was once again absolutely stunning and I took far too many photos! I stood on the outside deck the whole time which was fairly cold but the view made it worth it.

Once in Weggis we had a bit of a walk around, we saw the Beau Rivage hotel where nan and pa stayed when they came here. I could picture you sitting in the restaurant having a relaxing drink nan and pa! It was closed until April 12 though so we were able to walk around and have a look!

Next we walked to the cable car up the mountain there called mount Rigi. Usually it would be $70 each to go up here on a cable car and cogwheel train but with our Swiss rail pass we saved 50%. So up we went! The views were amazing!! We went right up to the top station, Rigi Kulm. I reckon it was about -10 degrees. We didn't bring hats today for some reason, silly us! But even with -10 sounding horribly cold, Berlin was -17 last time I was here. So once you get moving and as long as you have good layers it's ok. At a certain point it's just cold no matter what the temperature is! So we were alright :) we stayed up the top for a little bit and enjoyed the view. You could see Mt Pilatus and Mt Titlis! It was fairly clear.

We Headed back down, the cable car rocked a lot and was a bit scary on the way down! We bought lunch from the supermarket (what cheapskates haha). Caught the ferry back as the lake started to cloud over.

Next we went to the Glacier Garden. In 1872 when this area was being excavated to build a wine cellar, glacial potholes and fissures were found in the stone. Apparently 20 million years ago this area was subtropical and a beach! Then the ice age came 20000 years ago and created glaciers here that over time melted or moved to areas further around the lake. The museum here was really interesting with heaps of information about the climate and formation of the area as well as random sections about maps and an original Swiss house. Much more than I expected! Finally, we had a look at the famous lion monument. This was carved out of the stone in the 1800s to commemorate the lives of the Swiss guard soldiers that died guarding King Louis XVI in the French revolution.

We had a raspberry cake at the same bakery as yesterday - Bachmann - and a quick look in the shops on the way back.

Having sausages and yoghurt from the train station for dinner soon!

Love to all,
Claire
