Ruins and acropolis museum

Hello everyone!

Today we got up, looked outside and WOW! It was snowing! Heaps!!!!! So we excitedly went outside took photos and a video and enjoyed the snow!! A big contrast to yesterday's weather! Thought I was in Melbourne for a bit thought because it kept snowing then it would be sunny and then it would change again!!

Then we set off for the day in the snow! We started off looking at the ruins of Hadrian's library and the roman forum, followed by the ancient agora and the temple of hephaisteion. All were interesting but not as interesting as the acropolis. We enjoyed the view from a rocky hilltop near the agora called the Areopagus.

Next we walked to the Monastiraki market area. It was pretty junky but I bought some nice earrings (I've bought three so far but nan they're all cheap so it's not as bad as it sounds!). We found a shop that sells Billy's favorite Greek dessert called bougatsa which is made of pastry and filled with custard. We had cinnamon on top, so yummy!

Finally we went to the Acropolis Museum (no photos allowed though so that's why none on here). It was one of the best museums I have been to. They've redone the whole thing and it opened in 2009. You follow a logical sequence through the building and see all the ruins that were recovered from the acropolis and surrounds. I found it particularly interesting reading about the history of the acropolis and all the people that ruined it over time (persians burnt things down, British stole lots of the buildings and/or their parts, Romans destroyed a lot). And I loved looking at the parts from the Parthenon and other buildings on the acropolis that have been recovered. I personally think that the Brits should have to return what they took though...it's great that they have looked after them instead of them being ruined but really they belong in Greece. We had a nice late lunch in the cafe and then called it a day.

We finished our day at about 4 today but decided to have a rest so here we are. Fly to Rome tomorrow at 5.50pm Melbourne time, then catch a train to Naples and finally a train to sorrento. I am about 95% sure there is wifi there, but if you don't hear from me until the 13th you know why!!

Lots of love from snowy Greece,
Claire
