Hi all,
Today was lovely and sunny! We called nan and pa first off and while on the phone a service was happening in piazza Bra. There was one carriage of a death camp train from the holocaust, with pictures of people who died attached. There were heaps of soldiers and nuns and a band played, and wreaths were left in the park. There were signs saying '27 Gennaio' (27 January) so I'm assuming it's an anniversary of something from that time but I couldn't understand the rest of the sign.
Then we meandered through the streets of Verona, just relaxing and looking around! We went to piazza Erbe, a market square, and went up the Torre Dei Lamberti (a bell tower) where we enjoyed a beautiful sunny view of the town! Next we went to Juliet's house. In summer this house and courtyard is completely packed, but we had the museum and courtyard practically to ourselves! As well, I even got to stand on the famous balcony where Romeo and Juliet used to meet and mum took a photo! Yay for winter! The museum had some old furniture and some original frescoes, as well as passages from Shakespeare's play. You used to be able to stick your love letter to Juliet on the outside wall but apparently that stopped in 2004, so I put my letter in the postbox to Juliet. Get back to me in 10 years and I'll tell you if my requests were granted haha.
We looked around the nearby area at the civic type buildings (medieval law courts, banks etc) and then at the San Maria Antica church where the Della Scala family are buried. Had a bit of a look in the shops, then it was still only about 12 noon.
My friend Gary from work came here in July and told me if I had spare time in Verona to go to Lake Garda, a 15 minute train ride away. So we decided to go here as the weather was nice! We caught the train to the town of Pescheria and had a lovely walk for about 1-1.5 hours in the sunshine! Then we had a cheese crepe and headed back to Verona.
When we were back we went to st Zeno's Basilica which again had a great brochure that gave us heaps of information. Now we're back in our room and will go out for dinner later!! Have loved it here but can't wait for Milan tomorrow!
By the way, just heard on the news that Athens has had a metro train strike for the last 10 days that was forced to end by authorities. We were soooo lucky that didn't happen while we were there!
Love to all,
Claire
