Dennis Severs' House

Hi everyone!

Had a lie in this morning and when I woke up I tried so hard to avoid the footy scores. We played GWS at 4am our time which I was not prepared to get up for. I'm dedicated but that's just ridiculous! I was doing so well until I made the mistake of looking at the ladder to check who was top. Then when I started watching and the commentators said this was a battle for fourth (and I had just seen we were fourth) I had ruined it for myself. Oops - but at least it was the positive side of the spoiled surprise!! So I've watched the game on and off today. Just finishing it off now. Not the most exciting but hey a win is a win. Gonna be a hard month for us coming up, but will be a test of how good we really are.

We had some people come over to view Kelly's room today so I met them, she goes home soon as her visa is up. Afterwards I walked 25 minutes into Shoreditch and went to Dennis Severs' House at 18 Folgate Street. My friend Jo told me about it in March so I added it to my London to do list. It was very hidden, the door at the front looks like just another house! Only saw it because some other women were out the front waiting too. We had to knock on the door to be let in! It's a bit hard to describe, but it's a "still life drama". A man named Dennis Severs lived in the house but kept it furnished as if it were in the 18th and 19th centuries. He wrote a book about it as well, and since his death from cancer in 1999 the house has been open to the public. You walk through for about 45 minutes. There are 4 levels and 10 rooms. Your senses are basically overwhelmed to make you feel like you've gone back in time and the occupants of the house (the fictional Jervis family who were silk weavers and lived in the house 1725-1919).

There were smells, sounds and sights. I could smell candles and different foods, certain parts of the house were warm and some were cold. It's so hard to describe what it was like as you really have to go yourself to truly understand. But I really enjoyed it. There were notes everywhere reminding the occupants to do things, half finished cups of tea, quills sitting on paper as if they had just finished using them. The whole idea is that you've gone into the house just as the owners have rushed out for some reason and you're transported back in time. You couldn't take photos but I'll attach some off google.

Having a bit of an easy night tonight. Doing a bit of planning for the summer and just getting myself ready for a week of work back with the year 2s - yay!!

Love to all
Claire
