Hi everyone!
Firstly, my hamburgers last night were YUM! See attached photo. I actually had fun cooking dinner!
Then I walked for about 1.5 hours. Walked from the flat to St Paul's Cathedral. Then I decided to keep walking. I crossed the Thames, walked along the river for a bit and ended up near Temple station. I really enjoyed my walk. So nice to have a chance to chill and appreciate where I live! Got the bus home. The 76 bus just keeps on giving! Turns out it goes all the way from Waterloo to right out front of where I live - AND it's 24 hours! Going to be catching it a lot more from now on.
I'll be blunt - today wasn't great. Actually, it wasn't even good. But for every amazing day I have over here, there are going to be some crappy ones too. But that's ok, it just helps me to appreciate the good ones even more, and it gives me good material to talk about in teaching job interviews!!
Woke up and called the agency same as yesterday. This morning I got sent to an area in the north. And I took it, even though it was in an area I knew might be a little dodgy. And once I looked at the school's Ofsted report it said that everything in the school required improvement. But hey, I came over here for experience. This is it!!
So off I went, slightly less of a commute today (about 40-50 minutes). Started off well. Had a double class with year 12 (year 11 at home) and there were only six of them. All boys, and they were all nice. They did their work and were kind enough to show me my way to my next room. So the day started off well!
Then came periods 3 and 4. Oh god. Period 3 I had year 8 history. Half the kids refused to even come into the room, I had half my pens taken out of my pencil case and not returned, some of them called me awful names and were flat out rude. I won't go into detail but the worst was one student who just would not listen and threw things around the room and shouted. It was pretty bad. By the end of the lesson I had to try really hard not to cry once they all left. Not even because I was upset so much, more just in shock. All students are disruptive at one point or another, but never have I taught a class with such blatant disregard for rules and respect. I miss the Putney year 2s!
Period 4 I was meant to take year 9 but their teacher made it back from an appointment in time so I wasn't required. So the daily org put me in with another supply to cover year 10 English. And I thought the year 8s were disruptive! Yikes. The other supply basically took me coming into the room as his cue to not do anything. After ten minutes of trying to explain the content I pretty much gave up I'm sorry to say. The other supply told me he has been at this school for a few weeks and some classes just will not listen to supply teachers no matter what you do. It's really bad, but what could I do?! They just didn't care and they don't know me from a bar of soap. The other annoying thing was that all the girls wouldn't take him seriously anyway as he was Portuguese and fairly good looking, so they just giggled and talked. Sigh.
Period 5 was a great way to end the day. I had year 13 who are now in their last six weeks of high school. They're there because they want to be, so they did their work. Nice small class, and the two boys who had finished everything they needed to just ended up chatting to me about Australia. I told the others for every bit of work they did I would think of a slang word we use (they found this very amusing!!). Eg thongs/flip flops, pants/trousers, doona/duvet.
So overall a good start and end with a terrible part in the middle, but that's ok! I'm back at the same school as yesterday tmro so that will be good :) and then I'm taking Friday off because my friend Erika from is home and I'm having a tourist day with her. Four solid weeks of work booked in after that so I'm all set til summer now. And to think I was worrying I wouldn't get work! Everything is sorting itself out.
Tonight Jamie is coming over and I think I might make pasta. See what I feel like later!!
I'm so busy typing you all my blog that I've just missed my tube stop - oops! Feel special guys!
Love to all
Claire
