A much better Monday

Hello all!

Well you'll be pleased to know today went much better than last Monday (being sworn at). I was a tad nervous headed to school today, I guess because I'm a new teacher so although it didn't upset me being sworn at, it rattles your confidence a little bit.

Anyway - today was heaps better!! First period I had year 8 science. They worked in silence for the entire first 20 minutes, it was weird. It actually got to the point where I was starting to wonder what they were up to haha!!

Periods 2 and 3 I taught year 7 geography. What better subject for a world traveller to cover?! They were doing some work from their books on Russia....guess who has been there! I was able to help them with every single question, and as a reward I told them I would tell them stories about when I went to Russia if they worked well. It worked :) Both classes worked well and I was able to give out lots of merits and tell stories. Hooray for travel experiences!!

Period 4 was my lunch break, and then I covered science periods 5 and 6. Something very weird happened - me and another supply teacher were set to work in the same room! So we team taught and worked together. Worked quite well, one of us explained and then we both floated about the room. It turned out the students in this class haven't had a science teacher all term, and didn't most of last academic year either. It's shocking how big the contrast is between the education systems here and at home. At home you apply for 50 jobs, you might not even hear back for any. Everyone who studies teaching is looking for a job, and mostly all you'll be offered is a one year contract if you're lucky. In London, the teacher shorter is insane. You've got kids having a supply teacher constantly for subjects because the school can't find anyone, or finds someone and they drop out due to being offered another job. Crazy!! I feel sorry for the students, must be very unsettling.

One of the students in period 6 was so kind. They had been making things out of plexiglass in DT and today was the day they got to keep them. I noticed his was 'The Flash' lightning bolt and when I asked him about it it turned out the reverse flash was on the back! Upon telling him it's one of my favourite shows he insisted I keep it - no matter what I said! It's so cool :D

Tonight I'm washing my sheets, making dinner and then staying at Jamie's. This is the thing about having one set of sheets and rarely being home long enough to wash them, ah well!!

Back to the primary school to cover year 1 tmro.

Love to all
Claire
