Hi all!
I'm on the train and it's air conditioned. Oh my god HEAVEN! Never will I take air con for granted again in my life.
Last night I went for a walk the opposite way on Regent's Canal. I prefer the way to Angel but it was still nice! And then this morning....I actually got up and went for a run! Yay!!!!!! So proud of me :) Ran around Shoreditch Park for half an hour solid. Good to see I still have some fitness. It was a nice morning and I did a few laps. I could see the Shard in the distance!
Today went fairly well. I wore my play suit to school, which probably didn't make me look all that professional but I decided it was ok because of the heat so off I went. The heat warnings on the tube were in full force today. Never have I been warned to carry water so many times in my life. When I got to Waterloo station they were all over the display boards! Hottest day since 2006 here today at 35 degrees - hottest day in Wimbledon's history!! For some reason though even though it heats up a bit here most summers they go crazy and call it a "heat wave" like it's completely unexpected. It's summer guys - sometimes it will get hot!! Jess was streaming the radio before school and people were ringing up saying how warm it was already. So funny.
Got to school and the classroom was boiling. Today we did painting and writing poems, phonics and then writing our poems onto our paintings! I had to get a bit cross but they did so so well heat considered. Some of the boys were still in trousers and not shorts - phwoah!!!
I had a few secret weapons up my sleeve today. I started playing calming music when we came to sit on the carpet to calm them down. My main secret weapon was one that Mrs Jackson had when I was in prep in 1998. We had no air conditioner on our classroom and she used to have us lie on the floor and play "dead fish" and spray us with a spray bottle. My spray bottle today was my best friend!! I used it as positive reinforcement. Being quiet? Have a spray. Listening? Have a spray. Doing good work? Have a spray. Pretty well anything positive = get a spray! They loved it.
Something special today at school was the fact that I have two student teachers in class with us the next three days. Can you believe that? I'm 22 and a graduate and they're in observing me and asking questions! Such good experience for me!!! They are both really nice and helped different tables today which was good.
After school Jess and I walked to the local shops and bought an ice lolly (icy pole). Best. Idea. Ever. Amazing! I got most things set up for tmro but then I couldn't think straight anymore because the room was so stuffy. The hottest part of the day here is 4-5pm so I've made myself a list and I'll get the rest done in the morning. And somehow this arvo I fluked an air conditioned national rail train. A rarity, but I'm so glad!
Headed to Jamie's tonight for dinner and an ice cream - can't wait!
Love to all
Claire
