Blencathra

Hello everyone!

Last night we went into Keswick and had fish and chips for dinner. It was absolutely delicious - except for when I accidentally put sugar on my chips instead of salt. Oops!!

Today we set off after breakfast to Blencathra, a huge mountain walk not far from where we are staying. We set off not really knowing where we were going with only the vague directions given to us by our B&B owner to go by! They don't like signage here but never mind. Luckily we found the way. Climbed up the first hill and ended up on a plateau. That went for a while until eventually we came to a lake and a VERY steep ridge that is known around these parts as Sharp Edge. And I can see why! On average, 15 people die doing this climb a year, but that's mainly in winter. We started up and the first part wasn't too bad, but after a little while it got quite scary. It was very windy and we were literally rock climbing up a cliff edge with a very sheer (and long!!!!) drop. Had to find good parts of rock to hold onto and hoist yourself up. I did find myself Thompson "why are we doing this?!?!" at points but once we finished I was really glad we did it. According to Dean (owner of our B&B) we have now done two of the best walks in England. Even though it was a little scary I found it a lot of fun, and Brendon and I even think we enjoyed it more than the walk the other day. We got to the top and took some photos, and with our adrenaline pumping Brendon and I ran the next bit!!!

We kept walking across the top of the mountain and came across some magnificent views along the way before beginning our descent down the other side. My knees started to hurt again like the other day and I slipped at some point but never mind. We enjoyed the views on the way down and ran into some cute sheep too.

Made it to Threlkeld, the small town where the owners of the B&B's children go to school. Here we stopped and had a much deserved drink at the pub! I was exhausted at this point and it was difficult to get back up but we still had 40 minutes to go. We walked the remainder of the way back along the road and made it to our car.

The rest of the day has been spent relaxing. We are going out for dinner soon to the White Horse Inn near where we parked our car. Tmro mum and dad drop Brendon and I at Kendal station and we make our way back to London for a day and a half before setting off to Ireland on Sunday. I've had such a wonderful time these few days in the Lake District and it's been really lovely being able to spend some time with mum, dad and Brendon. :)

Love to all
Claire
