Glacier express. Travelled to Zermatt

Hello!

Well yep, I took another 222 photos today - oops!! We walked down to the station this morning after a great breakfast! Caught the Glacier Express which is a special train from St Moritz to Zermatt that takes 8 hours and goes through the alps. We went over many bridges and through many tunnels. Especially impressive were the helical tunnels that swap you from one side of the valley to the other, so clever!!

The area we were in has been a unesco world heritage site since 2008 and I can see why. Incredibly beautiful! Especially in winter. I have never seen so much snow in my life. Some places it was so white we needed our Sunnies!!!

We had a three course meal on the train which was a little disappointing. The cream of asparagus soup was good but beef stroganoff and tiramisu had been thawed out and you could tell. But the scenery made up for it!! As well, we had three other people in our carriage and only for some of the journey. In summer it's full!!

A specific tunnel we went through called the Furkapass is 15.7km long and takes 15 minutes to get through. Before this was built in 1982 the train could only go in the summer months because the area the train went through instead was very prone to avalanches! The bridges and tunnels here are designed magnificently. It's so amazing that you can descend and ascend such great heights with such ease, especially when there is so much snow!

We arrived in Zermatt. Couldn't see the Matterhorn because of fog but it was 5pm do fingers crossed for tomorrow!! Our hotel is cosy (aka small haha!) but it will do for two nights. It's a cute little chalet type place. The whole town is cute actually! Especially with a thick blanket of snow coating it. We had apple and cinnamon crepes for tea and went for a walk.

We came back to the room and mum heard a band from our balcony. We had seen an ice hockey pitch earlier and it was coming from there. So we just went out there and sure enough there was an ice hockey match underway between zermatts team (Heim) and a team that weren't very good (losing 8-0). So we watched 15 minutes!!

Please everyone keep your fingers crossed for us that the sky is clearer tomorrow - I need to see the Matterhorn!!!! Haha.

Love to all,
Claire
