Hello from Lauterbrunnen!
Today we woke up at 7am and much to my amazement you could see the Matterhorn from our balcony!! So we decided to go up to Gornergrat. The train operated the full way today so we caught it at 8am and were up there at half past. Words cannot describe how incredibly beautiful the Matterhorn is! Especially with the sun lighting it up! It was breathtaking! It was only us and one other person up the top on the viewing platform, and we went up so early that we beat the snow plough so we had to trek through very deep snow! But the waterproofing on our shoes works! It was -20 up there so our hands and feet started to sting a bit. But as soon as I looked at the view I forgot it hurt because it was so amazing! We had a quick look in the shop and went back down (100 photos later!!!!). We saw a st Bernard dog on the way down! They do search and rescue up on the mountain if needed.
Then we got our bags and caught the train to Lauterbrunnen. Because its in a valley part way up to the jungfrau mountain we had to change trains three times. Once at Visp, then at Spiez and finally at Interlaken. Trains here are incredible. The stations are huge and very easily accessible and trains run regularly and on time (take note, Metro!!!). So even though we had a 10 minute, 6 minute and then 8 minute intervals in between trains we made all of them! The second train we nearly missed though because the platform was far away. This ended up with us running and shouting as if we were on the amazing race and both getting on different carriages as the conductor signalled for the train to leave - close!!!!
We arrived in Lauterbrunnen and it was beautiful and sunny here too! Our hotel is really modern and clean and in a great location. Not much open today as its Sunday so we went for a walk and explored the town. Lauterbrunnen is famous for its 72 waterfalls. Most of these are frozen at the moment obviously but there are a few still going! Occasionally they drop snow too and it makes a really loud noise! We stopped for lunch and enjoyed delicious pies and shared a brownie. Was just what we felt like! Then we kept walking. We saw cute little farm houses, the river, the town church etc. As well we saw helicopters and para gliders! We stopped at an empty farmhouse and made a snowman in their paddock which was good fun! I put a lightning bolt on his forehead and we decided to call him Harry haha. Seemed like a good idea to put my beanie and scarf on him - until I had to wear them again and they were cold!!!!
Tonight we're going to have rösti (a local potato specialty) at a local restaurant!
Love to all,
Claire
