Hey everyone!
First of all dinner last night was amazing and we are returning there tonight! We each had rösti (traditional Swiss grated fried potatoes with seasoning) with various toppings and shared an apple strudel. Can't wait to eat there again tonight!!
Today we set off early. It was foggy, you couldn't see a thing and it was snowing very heavily. Regardless, we got the train from Lauterbrunnen to Kleine Scheidegg and then changed for Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe at 3454m above sea level. Usually there are spectacular views....not today :( but we still enjoyed it because there are other things to do there like an ice palace, a panorama and various information points. We did go outside briefly but witj -13 degrees (warm for up there!) and 280km/h winds it wasnt fun! The train up there is also interesting because you travel 5km through huge glaciers and mountains. Must have been very difficult to build the railway! To get back down the trains only came every hour and we missed one by literally 3 seconds. We were feeling a bit depressed at this stage at the lack of view and now this!
But our day improved! Mum had said she wanting to go sledding if we could but in Lauterbrunnen a man told us the conditions would be too poor to today. But! When we returned
To Kleine Scheidegg this section of the mountains had cleared and was beautiful! So we hired a sled each and set off down the 10km track! We were fairly unsure of ourselves the first time and had difficulty controlling them. The views were lovely though! It took us an hour and a half to complete the track. Then we got the train back up and did it again though and completed the track in only 35 minutes! I only stopped once when I fell off at a hairpin bend (stopped heaps the first time). The track was so nice. Beautiful forest alongside it and cute cabins. It also followed the train line (everyone on the train saw me stack and eat snow at the hairpin bend - how embarrassing!!!). So we ended up having a great day! My muscles hurt though and I think I'll sleep well! Stopped quickly in Wengen on the way down and then sent our sleds back up on the train.
We head off to Lausanne on lake Geneva tomorrow at about 9.30pm Melbourne time!
See you in Lausanne (back to French speaking we go!!)
Love to all,
Claire
