My blogging app works again - hooray! Pictures on this post are from the night out in Oban and today.
Having a fab time in Glasgow. Emma is spoiling me absolutely rotten, she's so lovely! She picked me up from the station, insisted on shouting me dinner and let me wash every single item of clothing in my suitcase. I feel so clean now!! And she insisted on me sleeping in her bed and her sleeping on a mattress in the living room - I feel terrible!! I've told her she's sleeping in her bed the other nights haha.
She picked me up from the station and walked me to her and Mark's flat, which is right near Glasgow Green in the middle of everything! It was so great to catch up.
Had a bit of a lie in this morning. I woke up to my alarm at 4.40am to watch Collingwood play but a couple of minutes in I started dozing off. I'll watch it in the next couple of days but I'm glad we had a win and Ben Reid played so well!
Then we had some breakfast and set off for the day. We went on one of those city sightseeing buses that gives you lots of information. Emma has always wanted to go on this so it was a good opportunity for us both to see the city and learn about it!
We did the entire route starting from George Square, the main square. We went all around the east and west ends of the city, past the green (where Bonnie Prince Charlie stationed his troops at one point) and St Andrews Square, the Tolbooth where executed peoples' heads were placed on spikes as a warning and the main streets, past the concert arenas and then up to the northwest. We got off the bus when we arrived at Kelvingrove. Here we went in the museum, which opened in 1901 and has over 8000 artefacts. We saw some artwork and stuffed animals.
Then we headed uphill to the University of Glasgow. This is the second oldest university in Scotland, established in 1451 and 20,000 students attend university here. Danton on my South America tour in February made me promise I would come here as he did an exchange here and told me that JK Rowling wanted them to film the 'Harry Potter' movies here, but the university said no so they were filmed in Oxford instead. We had fun taking photos and commenting on how much like Hogwarts the grounds and buildings looked. Today was beautiful and sunny so it was even better :)
We then walked through Kelvingrove Park in the sun and got back on the bus. The commentary was an actual person this time and he was fantastic!
We then got off at the Botanic Gardens stop and had a wander. We walked through Kibble Palace, a greenhouse built in 1873. Here we saw carnivorous plants and even some Aussie plants!
We then walked down Byars Road and had lunch at the Grovenor in Ashton Lane, a cute little street full of bars and restaurants. We then got back on the bus and enjoyed the rest of the route. From George Square we walked through Argyle Street which reminded me so much of Bourke Street or the like at home. We even went into Princess Square shopping centre which reminded me of Melbourne Central, and then Argyle Arcade which reminded me of lots of the arcades at home!!
Something I found really funny here is the statue of the Duke of Wellington. He has a traffic cone on his head! Apparently the council take it down most days but people put it back overnight!
Now we're back at Emma's and she's giving me a pedicure - I am being well and truly spoilt! I have needed my feet scraped for weeks now but it's £30-40 everywhere here. Emma is so lovely!
We are eating leftovers from last night and then having a night out tonight!!
Glasgow gets a bad rap as being boring, but I'm finding it really interesting and having a great time!
Love to all
