Vigeland Sculpture Park, Akershus Fortress, Opera House

Hello all!

Have had a really great day with Dad! The weather is exceptional. 19 degrees and beautiful blue skies with sunshine. It's warm enough that I wore my hippy pants from Asia with a singlet and I have been comfortable all day.

We started off by having breakfast at Dad's hotel. Wow! The only included brekky I've had this whole trip has been in Mykonos and it was nothing to write home about. This breakfast was a buffet with breads, cheeses, meats, hot food, cereals and fruit. It was amazing! I ate so much I felt sick and haven't been hungry all day.

Then we walked the 40 minutes to Vigeland Sculpture Park. Gustav Vigeland was a skilled sculptor and his best work is housed in this park. The park is 80 acres big and houses 212 of his works, including the most famous -"the little hothead". The sculptures were made between 1906 and 1942. Dad and I had a wonderful time in the sunshine checking out all the sculptures and even copying some of their poses. I'm rather confused as to why they're all naked, but I still thought they were pretty cool all the same!! We were lucky we went fairly early as when we were leaving a huge cruise ship group arrived! So we took our pictures, rubbed the hand of the little hothead for luck and walked through the side of the park.

Next we walked to Akershus Festning (Fortress). The first mention of it was in the 15th century. Over the centuries it has been a prison, royal residence, fortification and now houses events. We walked around the fortress gardens which again were really beautiful in the sunshine. Everything is very green here! We enjoyed some pretty views from up on the castle walls and then did an audio tour of the castle itself. We went through halls, bedrooms and lots of medieval decorated rooms. Saw the dungeons and the dark passageway where apparently two ghosts reside!!

Once finished there, we walked over to the opera house. We got a three scoop ice cream on the way and sat down to enjoy it. Absolutely delicious!! While sitting, a bridal party came along and boarded a boat with their guests. Stunning day for it! We will be in half their photos.

Then we headed over to the opera house. It was built in 2005 to look like a glacier jutting out into the water. It's appearance is ok, but I loved being able to walk up on the roof! Quite a steep climb but nice views in the sun.

We are having a rest now and then heading to the World Cup festival soon to watch Columbia vs Greece.

Dad heads off to Flåm tomorrow and then me, him and mum meet in Helsinki Friday week. So I'll be up nice and early tomorrow morning to see him off and then listen to us play the Bulldogs on the radio. GO THE PIES!!!!

Love to all
Claire and Neil
