Remember, remember the fifth of November...!

Hi all!

Remember, remember the fifth of November, gunpowder, treason and plot....!

Today I got to school and was told I was in nursery most of the day! A couple of children were a little unsettled by a new person at first (they're only 8 weeks into school) but they were OK.

We had a great morning playing with play dough, scooping and measuring porridge, drawing and gluing, reading stories and doing puzzles.

Such lovely children! We also had some parent tours come around which went smoothly. I was a bit nervous though!

I helped with their lunch then had lunch myself. I spent the afternoon in year 1. We talked about firework safety because of tonight being bonfire night. They were so cute, telling me all about Guy Fawkes and King James I haha.

Then we had assembly and it was home time. It was dark at 4 today and rained a lot!! I did some marking and everything I had to do, then got all rugged up. I got the bus to Earlsfield, grabbed a kebab and met Jamie. We walked the 15 minutes from here to Wimbledon Park.

Today is the 5th of November. In the United Kingdom they have 'bonfire night' on this day to commemorate the 5th of November 1605 when Guy Fawkes and 12 others plotted to blow up the Houses of Parliament to kill King James I because he despised Catholics and they were Catholic. But their plan failed and Guy Fawkes was caught in the act.

Every November 5 since, people here have bonfire night. They burn effigies of Guy Fawkes or someone hated from that year and then have a fireworks show! Lots of people set off fireworks, hence the firework safety lesson. It's not illegal over here and anyone over 18 can buy them. How nuts is that! Everything else here is so politically correct and safety conscious!!

I was a bit sceptical the fireworks would be crap as I hadn't heard good reports, and over here you have to pay. We paid £8 a pop! But I was wrong! There were two sessions and Jamie and I went to both. Before each session they lit a huge bonfire of wooden crates with a Guy Fawkes effigy on top! It burned and burned (and I kept commenting that this would NEVER be allowed in Aus!) and then we went to watch the fireworks. Both shows went for 20 minutes! The first session was to Disney music, the second to 'music from the decades'. Alisha and Shannon joined us for the second ones. I loved them! Lots of different fireworks and lots of very noisy ones I hadn't seen before. They reminded me of the ones from 'Harry Potter' that Fred and George let off in movie #5!

Had a great night and I'm really glad I got to see the tradition in action before I head home. Now I'm at home after 14 hours on my feet, my boots are covered in mud and I'm ready for sleep!! Gonna be interesting though, fireworks going off constantly outside!!

Love to all
