City tour

Hi all,

So this morning Lisa and I had breakfast and went straight to the supermarket. We bought lots of things for our picnic dinner tonight!

We then just walked around town. It was "hot" today! England has made me weak regarding warm weather already. Today it was 19 degrees and sunny and I got so warm! Soaked up so much vitamin D today, it was wonderful.

At 1 we sat in the Place D'Armes. I bought another 3 scoop ice cream and we just sat and enjoyed it. The sun was out, there was music playing. People were sat about having lunch. Lovely!

At 2pm we joined a walking tour run by the tourist office. Our guide's name was Michaela, she was from Germany. I learned a few facts about Luxembourg... The country has a population of 563,000, but 46% of the people living here are foreigners! It's only 2586km squared in size. The official language is French but all the newspapers are in German. There is also a luxembourgish language which is apparently a mix of the two! Luxembourg is the only grand duchy  in the world (a state or territory ruled by a grand duke). Still unsure as to why that's different from a king?? The prime minister here is openly gay and as Luxembourg is very liberal was the first gay prime minister who has gotten married.

On the tour we saw lots of the old town including the grand duchy palace, various viewpoints, the Notre Dame Church where we saw a map of how "big" Luxembourg used to be before parts of it were given away after losing wars, and ended at the Golden Lady statue. This was erected to commemorate the end of WWI. When Luxembourg was occupied by the Germans in WWII they took down the golden lady and hid it, and it was found underneath a soccer pitch in 1981!

The tour was quite good and Lisa and I even made a new friend! A guy called Jordan was on the tour. He's from Manchester but is studying in Aachen in Germany at the moment. He's hilarious and the three of us get along really well! Bit weird though, if you remember a few weeks back, 2/3 of the people I met in Dublin were Lisa and Jordan! Need to meet another Fiona haha. Think I've jumped into a black hole haha.

Tonight the three of us are having a picnic up Kirchberg hill. We are going to sit up there while the sun sets and eat our picnic. We have wine, cheese, ham, salami, strawberries, bananas, chocolate and lollies. Aaaah :)

Up early tomorrow morning to watch us play Adelaide. GO PIES! Cheer loud for me please family!!

Love to all
Claire
