Bayeux

Hi everyone!

I'm currently writing the blog sitting stranded outside of my hotel. Funny that I'm stranded, on the train before I was just thinking how it's already been a month since I got locked in at Rhi's place. Now I'm locked out of a hotel!

This morning I got up and watched Hawthorn vs Geelong - what a boring game of AFL! So annoying that Hawthorn are going to be so dominant again. We had better hope that Adelaide or someone is good enough to beat them.

After the match I packed up, cooked myself some eggs and mushrooms for breakfast and cleaned the apartment. Then Bernadette came and met me and helped me carry my things down the staircase and then to her car. She was so kind, she gave me a lift to the station! This saved me a 20-30 minute footpathless trek to the station!

I got my train and spent 15 minutes on the first one before changing at Dol. I then had just over a two hour journey to Bayeux in the Normandy region. All the trains were packed today! Everyone heading back home after Easter I suppose.

Now is where the fun begins. I arrived in Bayeux all ok, and walked the 10 minutes to my hotel. I had received an email from them last night asking if I wanted to check in online but it wouldn't work so I didn't bother. Upon arriving the reception had a sign saying it didn't open until 5 (it was 3.30) but to use the checkin machine. Which I did. I used four different cards and none of them worked. There was a man and his son from Belgium also waiting so we decided to go to the hotel next door. I asked to use their wifi and luckily the man was friendly and let me, but again the website wouldn't work.

So now I'm sitting outside my hotel on a plastic chair with all my bags - lucky I didn't plan on doing anything today!! It's sunny and clear so it's quite nice sitting in the sun. But needless to say I will be asking for a discount off my stay because this is just ridiculous! The man and his son are using a metal detector to find 'treasure', I'm chatting to them and writing my blog, diary, doing basically anything I have to do later to kill time!!

8.23pm
So asking for a discount didn't work. The lady was alright about it though, I just pointed out all the flaws in their system that they need to fix!

I had some good news though - I didn't realise I had already paid the $160 Aussie hotel bill, so I have more money in my budget than I thought! It more than covers the boots I bought last week, woohoo!

It turned out the man and his son were part of a family of four with one more son and a wife. The wife is American and they all live in the Netherlands and are both teachers! So I made quite good friends with them by the end of it. They said if I hadn't booked a D Day landings tour they would've driven me everywhere - never mind!! I ran into them in town later. Was really strange to hear someone call out my name! First time in ages.

Once I had finally checked in and left my things in the room I headed out to explore. It was so gorgeous and sunny today! Basically spent about 45-60 minutes walking around town. I'll have some history for you tomorrow but today I saw the beautiful cathedral which looked absolutely stunning in the late afternoon sunlight. Saw the cute little streets and a small canal too. All the restaurants were closed due to it being Monday and a public holiday. So I went to the supermarket and bought some more groceries - bread and cheese for dinner again! Got myself some cider too because I felt like a change from wine. Keeping to my budget really well. I bought a small plastic bowl and some milk and am going to use the cornflakes I've left from St Malo for breakfast for the next few days!

Off to see the tapestry and other attractions in the city tomorrow. Looking forward to it, the town looked really nice tonight.

Love to all
Claire
