City museum and another walking tour!

Hey everyone!

Our picnic last night was so great. We had a great feast atop the French fortification on Kirchberg hill built in the 1600s. We had a fun few hours chatting, singing pop music and eating yummy food. We watched the sun set and the sky was so beautiful!

This morning I came downstairs and watched Collingwood vs Adelaide. Wore my jumper in reception, got some funny looks haha. Thought we didn't play very well but Adelaide are a great team so no shame. Played well in the last quarter at least!!

Then the three of us set off for the day. Lisa and I headed to the City of a Luxembourg Museum, but Jordan had been there yesterday before we met him so he went elsewhere. It was a really nice summary of some history of the city and info about the city today. It turns out Luxembourg was first founded in 963 when a guy called Siegfried got the paperwork for a castle called Lucilinburhuc which meant 'little fortress' in Moselle Frankish. This castle is what is now today the Bock Casemate ruins, but I'll come back to those later. Read a cute little story about the Bock and Siegfried which I'll attach in the photos below. A lot of EU things are based here, including the European courts of justice. And did you know the euro was only introduced in 2002? Didn't realise it was that recent! The best part of the museum was that people under 26 got in free - hooray!!

We then had a quick look at the markets in the main square but at this point it started to rain. We ran into Jordan and walked around town for a while. Went to some shops and particularly enjoyed a group of four boys busking in the street who caught our attention by singing a 5 Seconds of Summer song (Australian band!) and who were brilliant.

At 3pm we joined another walking tour, this time around the Wenzel Walk, the Bock Casemate and the Grund area. Our guide's name was Charles and even though he had lived here for 30 years, he had the strongest English accent I had ever heard! He was a great guide for our three hour tour though. The Bock Casemates are the castle ruins I previously mentioned. We explored those and part of the 27km of military tunnels under the city. We then did part of the Wenzel Walk, a circuit based around more city walls in an area of the city we hadn't yet explored. Learned a few more interesting facts on the tour - if you travel 30km in any direction from here you hit another country! And 80,000 people live in the city but 120,000+ work here, lots of commuters every day in a tiny area!!

Tonight we have had a cheap dinner at the hostel and are going for a walk to see the city by night later and have a drink.

Tomorrow I head to Antwerp and am back on my lonesome - Belgium here I come! I've been previously but only spent three hours in transit in Brussels.

Love to all
Claire
