Victoria Falls

Hello everyone,

Not sure if photos will work. Apologies if not, I will upload when I can.

Today we got up at 3.30am *cries* and drove to Livingstone. Rob and I both slept a fair bit on the bus.

After 6-7 hours on the road, we arrived at Victoria Falls (the town on the Zimbabwean side) and had a quick lunch.

Then we went to the Zimbabwean side of Victoria Falls. Victoria Falls is over a mile long and 100m in depth, it's the largest curtain waterfall in the world. David Livingstone discovered them in 1855. Spray is visible from the falls up to 20km away in high flow times, and because of this the Swahili name for the falls, Mosi Oa Tunya, means 'smoke that thunders'. It was so hot. It was very humid due to all the mist. The falls are along the fourth longest river in Africa, the Zambezi, which flows to the Indian Ocean.

The falls were breathtaking to look at, I was so excited! We are here as the flow is starting to increase. At other times of year there isn't too much water. I couldn't believe there was no fence around the walkways, wouldn't fly at home!!

After a couple of hours we hopped on the bus and headed across the border to Zambia. We got another stamp in our passports (I have nine pages left now!) and we were in.

Our campgrounds are nice but there are lots of bugs around as we are right near the Zambezi River. We watched a video about available activities and Rob and I have booked Devil's Pool (swimming atop the falls) and a sunset cruise.

The cruise was very relaxing. At this point we were both very grumpy because it was hot, Rob's foot was sore and we haven't showered all year (so jam packed last two days we haven't had a spare minute - yuck!). But we had a couple of drinks and enjoyed the beautiful light. We saw a crocodile and heaps of hippos!! I even got a photo of one with its mouth open. The sunset was also lovely.

Lots of our group have gotten pretty rowdy tonight but Emily and I are just chilling. I'm looking forward to a couple of days here to refresh.

Love to all

Claire
