Santa Monica

Hi all, We had an extremely early morning today as unfortunately another of our flights changed from 9am to 6am. We were up at 3am in DC which was midnight in the LA time zone we were flying to to catch an Uber to Dulles Airport. The flight went pretty well though, I chanced picking us some seats down the back and despite Alaskan Airlines saying it was a full flight we had a seat empty next to us. Rob slept against the window and I somehow curled up small enough to lie down with my pillow across two seats. We each slept about two or three hours so didn’t feel as terrible upon landing as we thought we would. Upon landing we caught a bus to Santa Monica. I’ve been lucky enough to come to the states four times now, and I’ve visited Santa Monica during each trip. In 2005 as a family and in 2019 with Rob we started our trip here to chill out a bit and get through jet lag, and in 2017 alone and now on this trip I’ve ended my trip here to break up the journey home a bit. It’s Los Angeles’ version of Glenelg in Adelaide, a beachside suburb with some pedestrianised streets that has a much less dodgy and revolting feel to it than Hollywood. We couldn’t check in at our hostel so we left our bags and went walking. We stayed here together last time and it’s in a great location right near Santa Monica Pier. We first sat in a cafe and enjoyed a coffee and a muffin, and then walked to the pier. It’s always busy here, it doesn’t seem to matter what time of year! We did a lap and then followed the path south to Venice Beach. This area is gross, I’m not sure why we walked this way given we knew this is the case!! But we appreciated it for what it was - crazy people yelling their heads off, people trying to hand you CDs, and like most other places we’ve visited on this trip, a constant smell of weed. I’ve passively smoked so much on this trip, it makes me feel sick and I’ll be glad to not have to do so at home! On the way back we sat on the swings for a while watching the rollercoaster go around and then headed back to the hostel where we could check in. Our room is really comfortable! I’m posting early today as we will likely have a pretty early night. Rob is off to turn baseball tomorrow and I’m planning on exploring the downtown area which I’ve never done here before. We think we are going to have Chipotle for dinner tonight one last time on the trip! Love to all Claire Xoxox
