Hello all,
The four of us watched the ‘60 Minutes’ special on Mason Cox last night,
and then Maria and Eric watched a bit of the Pies vs Roos game with us
this morning. We won, and that means we won all seven games I’ve been
away for! I’ll be back to watch our game in Perth on TV next week.
Rob and Eric went for a bike ride this morning while Maria and I watched
some TV, and then the four of us left around 12 for Baltimore. Once we
arrived we parked our car and walked the short distance to Camden Yards,
the baseball field here. We saw the Baltimore Orioles play the Texas
Rangers. I had previous links to both these teams, as we saw Baltimore
play in New York last Wednesday, and I saw the Texas Rangers play the
San Francisco Giants with Mum, Dad and Adam when I was 12!
No home runs today, but Baltimore won 3 runs to 2. We enjoyed the venue
and the crowd here more than Yankee Stadium. The fans seemed more
dedicated and happy, at Yankee it felt like the tickets were so
expensive that people only got to attend occasionally as a treat. The
music also wasn’t nearly as loud and there were nowhere near as many
gimmicky giveaways and competitions. We still had the obligatory
national anthem with fireworks and ‘God Bless America’ at the 7th inning
stretch though!! During the game we shared a crab cake sandwich and
some crab meat queso fries. Both were delicious and Baltimore
specialties, but let’s not talk about the price….! I’ll be glad to see
the end of this exchange rate next week haha. The silver lining is it’ll
make inflation at home feel almost non existent.
After the game we walked to the inner harbour area where Maria and Eric
took me last time. It rained the whole time when we last visited, but we
enjoyed a nice walk today as the temperature was really pleasant. We passed a conference with crowds of people
on the way back, and Maria commented after we passed it that as an
American you think to yourself passing anything like that “this would be
the kind of place a shooting would happen”. It has crossed my mind
whilst being here at various points, and makes me glad I don’t have to
think that way at home.
We got back in the car and next stopped in a town called Annapolis, the
home of the US Naval Academy which was founded in 1845. It is also the capital
city of Maryland and is on Chesapeake Bay. We walked around the harbour
here and the cute buildings in the area. Some houses were built as long
ago as 1766! It was really beautiful.
Our final stop for the day was a seafood restaurant in Deale called
Skipper’s Pier. Eric and Rob both ate crab and I shared a seafood
platter with Rob which had fried oysters amongst other things. Maria also had me try ‘hush
puppies’ which were deep fried balls made from cornmeal based batter
that you eat with honey. All the food was delicious and the views from
our outdoor table were lovely. The surrounding area was really peaceful and lush. I love Maria and Eric's attitude to life - most weekends they get in there car and drive somewhere new to just walk around and explore. I guess Rob and I are pretty similar in that we are always going out and doing things as well.
Tomorrow is Memorial Day so Maria doesn't have to work and we are going to spend our final day in DC exploring more with her while Eric visits family.
Love to all
Claire
