Day at sea

Hi all,

If you haven’t already, check out my post below which summarises what we did on the five days we could leave the ship to visit some of the countries of the Caribbean, and includes photos of each day.

Today has been our cruising day, as we make our way back to San Juan, Puerto Rico. I didn’t sleep very well unfortunately, so when I got up I just wanted to head straight to the pool deck. The thought of a busy, loud buffet made me feel sick. So that’s exactly what I did. I think I didn’t sleep very well because it was so windy and bumpy overnight. Laying in bed felt like a constant state of vertigo!

When I got to the pool deck it was pouring with rain, but it soon cleared. I found a couple of seats in the shade and Rob kindly brought me some fruit to eat.

We sat there for a while, I posted my photos to Facebook and did some research online about what’s coming up. Then I went in the water which was really nice. At about 1pm they had a belly flop competition in the pool, which was pretty much a lot of overweight, attention seeking American men and one woman jumping into a pool (that sounded less harsh in my head, but it’s true!!). The strange thing was that there was one Puerto Rican contestant, but the people from and not from Puerto Rico all acted as if they came from different countries chanting either “USA” or “puerto Rico”. I’m even more confused about Puerto Rico being a USA territory now!

I had a laugh because the lifeguard was making all the adults move out of the low section of the pool to watch, and only letting kids sit there. When I looked up at him he said “you’re good, you can sit there”. Twenty eight this year and he still thought I was a kid - score!!

After the competition, Rob and I had lunch at ‘Johnny Rockets’ where we each had fries and a burger. The waiter only charged us for one person which was really nice, and we think it’s because we are always so friendly to all the staff on the ship. Sadly, that’s not the case for most people on board. We had a nice view of the ocean here.

After lunch, I packed up my suitcase in the room and then we both went for another swim in the pool. By this stage the ship was rocking so much that the pool became a wave pool! We felt like we were in a washing machine as we kept getting moved about by the waves which was a lot of fun.

Tonight we had our final dinner, and Godwin (our waiter) brought us double dessert. We are both so full we might explode! Now the plan is to call Nan and Pa and then go and see the farewell show.

There won’t be any posts for a week and a half now most likely, as we head to Cuba tomorrow where I probably won’t have internet. Going to Cuba is going to be a bit like going back in time! But I’ll do the same thing I did here - write the blog each day and put it up once I can.

As for the cruise, we have had a really great time. The food, the staff and the shore excursions have been fantastic. I think doing a cruise with Royal Caribbean closer to home could be good, as then there would be some other Australians. What I’m about to say will sound like I’m stereotyping, so I’ll start by saying that I have some amazingly lovely friends from the USA who are polite, worldly and fantastic people. However, most of the people from the USA on this ship have been demanding and rude towards staff, and talk at the tops of their voices so you know their entire life story, but then act like you’re an alien if you speak to them. I certainly hope I’ve never made anyone feel that way!! But aside from that, we’ve had a wonderful time and I’ve decided I do like cruising. I think though that if I am to do another one, it would have to still have lots of stops and opportunities to go and see things and learn about places.

Anyway, for the next ten days if you could all keep my Pa in your thoughts I would really appreciate it. He’s not feeling well and I’m hoping that soon he’ll be feeling a bit more himself again. Even though I might not be able to contact my family for the next little while, I’ll be thinking of them all the time and sending lots of love. Hopefully I can buy an internet card at some point to send a few quick messages.

Love to all
Claire
