Hi
everyone,
Today we had breakfast at our Casa Particular. The couple that own ours don’t
speak any English, but they’re really beautiful. We had fun playing charades at
breakfast trying to figure out what questions the lady was trying to ask us!
Eventually we had lots of fruit, some ham, cheese and bread, and then some
scrambled eggs. Yum!
At 8am, our group drove for an hour before catching a one hour ferry to the
island of Cayo Levisa. Rob and I enjoyed watching the crabs run around in the
mud while we waited for the ferry.
Once we arrived on the island, we walked through an area that was covered with
mangroves before reaching the beach. We staked out some sun lounges and we were
set. We started the day wondering how on Earth we would pass six hours at the
beach, but it went very quickly! The weather was beautiful – sunny, a slight
breeze. The water was beautiful blue and a pretty good temperature. Rob and I
played a game with some of the others with a ball where we tried to keep it out
of the water as long as possible. I swam for a fair while and had fun watching
the brown pelicans dive bomb into the water to catch fish. They really go for
it, the splash is huge!!
We had a couple of drinks throughout the day, and what we are quickly
discovering here in Cuba is that no alcohol is measured. At home, measuring
cups would be used and you get exactly one shot of whatever is in your drink.
When I ordered a mojito today, the bartender free poured the rum into my drink
while watching the baseball. Literally ¾ of my drink was rum!! While this might
sound like good value, I’m actually finding the drinks are too strong and I
can’t enjoy them as much. So a couple of the people in our group that speak
Spanish have started asking for a bit less alcohol. What a strange turn of
events – Australians, Irish and Poms asking for less alcohol in their drinks!!
Our lunch was included today and it was a yummy buffet at the beach.
Afterwards, I walked up to a nearby pier. Ben from our group was kayaking
nearby so took some cool photos of me on the pier from the water. Once he left,
I sat for a while and just took it all in. It was such a beautiful day.
We caught the 5pm ferry back and then drove back to Viñales in the dark. There were no street lights –
our driver José
did a great job!
Dinner was at a tapas restaurant, and then the English, Irish and Aussies went
out dancing again to the local salsa bar. We went last night too. Tonight we
actually danced though and it was lots of fun! The live music was great, the
cigarette smoke not so much!
Love to all,
Claire
