Hi all,
This morning we got up at 4am and headed to the airport for our flight
to Orlando. So begins the part of our trip to destinations that neither
of us have been to!
Our flight was good overall, but we got caught out due to not realising
that Alaska Air don’t provide food in flight. You would think paying
$350 AUD for a 5 hour flight would get you a meal, but never mind!
I appear to have caught Rob’s cough, but thankfully so far not the fever
and aches as well. Keep your fingers crossed for me it remains that
way!
We landed in Orlando. The airport was huge! Once we got our bags, we
headed to Budget rental cars. Once Rob started speaking, the lady
serving us said she had been to Melbourne and she loved our accents. We
had paid for the cheapest car available just to get us around - a Ford
Fiesta. She must have liked us (or the fact we are Australian) because
she upgraded our car to a bright red convertible Ford Mustang. Verrrrry
over the top! It almost seemed too good to be true, and we would soon
find out it was. We drove to our hotel, being stared at all the way! The
traffic was really bad. We made it eventually!
Once at our hotel, we dumped our things and walked to Walmart over the
road. If we weren’t tired and overwhelmed already, we were now. It was
huge and absolutely packed with people EVERYWHERE. Walmart is like
Bunnings, a pharmacy and Coles combined, it’s insane. We stocked up on
breakfast and lunch supplies as quickly as we could and headed back.
Back in the room, we were checking our credit cards online when we
realised that something was wrong regarding the rental car. Rob had a
$250 Australian charge on his card, and when we called up they told us
it was for all these extras that the lady had neither told us about or
shown us.
So after getting up at 4am, we had to drive all the way back to the
airport to sort it out. Thankfully there we were served by Shanita who
was amazing and sorted it all out for us. She said she couldn’t believe
all the crap the other lady had charged us for. We’ve now been put into a
Kia sedan and we didn’t have to pay for any of the fuel we used.
We are exhausted, but will sleep well knowing it’s sorted out. It’s just
been one of those days. Most of the time travel is amazing, but
occasionally you have a day like this where nothing goes your way. We
have each other, no one is hurt and we sorted it out. It’s all OK.
Tomorrow we are going to Epcot at Disneyworld for New Year’s Eve. I’m
hoping we have a good time, because so far we feel ripped off and
overwhelmed in Orlando. When the gates open at 8am it’ll already be
midnight in Melbourne, so happy new year all! I hope however you’re
choosing to celebrate you have a great night. What a decade it has been.
Finishing high school, completing my teaching degree, taking my gap
year and many other travels, starting my teaching career at home. Can’t
wait to see what “the 20s” have in store for us all.
Love to all
Claire
