Hollywood & Beverly Hills

Hello everyone,

Today we slept in a bit longer, and it was a great day for it. Just like the last time I visited, it poured rain the day after I left Disneyland! It would have been miserable today as many rides would have been closed and we would’ve gotten wet.

At 10, we caught an Uber to West Hollywood. Due to the rain, this took a lot longer than the way down to Anaheim. All up it took about an hour and a half. When we finally got to our motel, I was suspicious when a sign near reception said “no refunds five minutes after check in”. However, aside from a faint cigarette smell from a long time ago, our room is fine. It’s clean and cheap and only for two nights, so it’ll do the job.

We set out walking Hollywood Boulevard. Hollywood’s hey day was in the 1930s-50s. These days, the area is full of tourists and people trying to rip them off! We had a good time looking at the stars and the Chinese Theatre though, and Rob had a coffee. We had lunch at a pie place where we shared two delicious pies.

Then we caught an Uber up to Griffith Observatory. Unfortunately it’s closed on Mondays so I didn’t get to show Rob the telescopes, planetarium etc inside. But we still enjoyed the view. To the east there were some very dark grey clouds, but the view was still cool.

After having not much luck with phone reception up the hill, we caught a 50c bus down the hill before then getting another Uber to Beverly Hills. Our Uber driver this time was very chatty! On the way, I glanced out the window and we were next to the Troubadour. This is where Elton John played his first concert in America!

The Beverly Hills sign was our next stop, and then we walked down Rodeo Drive. We found it interesting and sad that earlier in the day, we had seen homeless people living in tents near the freeway, yet now here we were in the same city surrounded by items of clothing that probably cost more than my car. I also felt pretty out of place in my $7 Kmart leggings that I wear on every trip! Unfortunately, I didn’t have a rich guy’s credit card like Julia Roberts did in ‘Pretty Woman’ here!!

We went to the visitor centre and saw some old photos of the area, before enjoying a silver sculpture Ringo Star had donated to the city (he lives here) and city hall.

We are taking it easy tonight. The plan is to order some food using Uber Eats or something similar. Tomorrow we are off to Universal Studios. After a while, the smoke smell started to bother us more and more. Rob went to reception and asked to swap rooms, and we are now in a much better room. We can relax now :)

Love to all
Claire
