Uluwatu, surf lessons and Seminyak

Hello everyone,

Last night we went out for dinner as a group. After a day in the humidity and rain, myself and a few others in the group tried to make ourselves look as presentable as possible. I even put on a little bit of makeup! But as we set off from the hotel it started absolutely tipping down with rain. We got saturated to the point that my hair was wet like I had just jumped out of the shower. Note to self - don't bother trying with your appearance here!!

Dinner was delicious and we enjoyed a cocktail while watching the streets begin to flood and the pipes attached to the various bars and restaurants struggle with the heavy volume of rain flowing through them. After dinner we headed to a bar called 'Maxi'. Even though it was still raining, the vibe was nice. They had a live guitarist who was singing well known songs. I always find it interesting how singing somehow makes peoples' accents disappear. He was Indonesian and just listening to his voice you couldn't tell at all!

The drinks were cheap and very strong, I had one huge daiquiri for $5 Aussie. We played Jenga and some cards games and then I headed backwards with a few of the others about 11pm (still in the rain!).

This morning we headed out at 9. I'm fairly sure I'm getting a cold, the sore throat has begun. As well as that the mosquitoes attacked me at breakfast and kindly gave me nine bites on the one leg. It never takes them long!! Ah well. Julia, Ryan and the Swiss boys stayed out a fair bit later last night and we laughed at the Swiss boys snoozing and struggling on the bus. The traffic wasn't bad so it only took us an hour to get to another sea temple - Uluwatu.

'Uluwatu' translates to 'Top Rock', as this temples sits on a 70m cliff edge. It was built in the 11th century. The weather this morning was much kinder to us and we were treated to brilliant sunshine and views of the clear blue water. We walked around looking out for pickpocketing monkeys (thankfully not seeing any - I'm dreading the monkey forest tomorrow!) and soon got very hot. The views were beautiful and it was interesting seeing a number of religious processions and people leaving offerings for the Hindu Gods (some of which included cigarettes and lollies!).

Back on the bus - I was very glad of the air con - and we headed back to Kuta. We had a little bit of free time, during which I walked up Legian Street (the Main Street) with Eleanor and Luke. We looked in some shops, got some delicious frozen yoghurt and wandered about. On the way up, the shop owners were fairly harmless when trying to get us into their shops. On the way back they were stepping in front of us and blocking our path. Very annoying.

We met our group and had lunch at a Kuta Beach club. I had an amazing watermelon juice and a sandwich and then we all swam in their pool, I jumped off the diving board as well.

We headed across to the beach for our surf lesson. I tried to go in with an open mind, even though I've got a couple of injuries I was worried about. I've only tried to surf once (the people in my group were shocked as I think their image of an Australian is a surfer!) and it was on Year 9 camp in 2007. I absolutely hated it. And it turns out, nothing has changed. I gave the lesson on land a go, listening to the advice and trying to do what they said. But after about ten practice goes of pushing myself up, my wrist was starting to hurt. I injured it last year and it's given me a lot of grief, so I decided to boogie board with Eleanor and Claire. I was a little disappointed in myself but I have done plenty of adventurous things on my travels, and this one just didn't feel like the right fit.

We had fun boogie boarding in the sun. The weather was stunning today, albeit very hot. We watched the others attempt to stand up (and mostly stack it!!) and enjoyed the waves. Eventually after an hour, Claire and I headed back to shower. Then Claire, Julia, Reyann, Rob, Manuel and Greg met in the lobby to head to Seminyak for the sunset and to check out some beach clubs. We had the cutest cab driver with a very cheeky smile and funny sense of humour.

It was well worth going to Seminyak. It was absolutely beautiful! The seven of us went to a beach club called 'La Plancha'. We somehow fluked a group of beanbags right at the front. There was live music and beautiful lights and umbrellas. We had a really chilled out time sitting by the beach drinking a cocktail and soaking it all in. I'm really glad we came!

The taxi back was fairly quick after we found a genuine one. We stumbled across a religious procession but it was still only $4 Australian for four people to travel 20 minutes - unbelievable!

We are about to head up for dinner and drinks.

Love to all
Claire
