Hi all,
Last night we had dinner at an Indonesian place. I had my best Mie Goreng dish yet - it came with amazing chicken satay skewers! Tried a Bintang beer which was ok too.
Then we went for a night out in Kuta. The whole walk to the place, Claire and I were saying how we don't like to drink much on holiday as you feel crappy and we both get tired. When we arrived they had unlimited drinks between 9 and 12 if you paid 100,000 rupiah ($10 Aussie). We decided to give that a go and "have three drinks" to "make our money back". Thirteen drinks later, the vodka cokes were flowing and the group's dance moves (and my lack thereof!) were on display. We had lots of fun, but at midnight when some of the others left to go to the famous 'Sky Garden' nightclub, myself and a few of the others headed home. I need my sleep, some of them were out until 5.30am - I don't know how they do it!!
This morning I woke up feeling a bit rough due to a mix of alcohol and my cold progressing. The air conditioned two hour bus ride helped as it was a good rest. The scenery changed after a while and become much less built up and much more green.
We then arrived at Tegenungan Waterfall, where we descended some steep stairs to the water and went for a swim. The water was quite cold and the force of the water pounding down created waves that pushed you around a fair bit.
Back on the bus and 20 minutes later we arrived at our hotel in Ubud. Our hotel looks a bit like an ancient temple, with statues, archways and beautiful decorations all around. We have giant mosquito nets above our beds, I feel I may become a human pin cushion by the end of the trip, the a lots more mozzies around here!
Reyann and I showered, which was pretty difficult due to the shower head having to be held while you use it. Very difficult!! Then we went to an Italian place around the corner and I had a delicious pizza and a strawberry lassi to drink. We got some money out and then wandered a little - this was a mistake as we got caught in a tropical downpour and got absolutely soaked!! We met the group though and luckily after a while the rain eased off.
We then walked the five minutes as a group to the Monkey Forest. Along with surfing, I had been absolutely dreading this. There are 700 monkeys living here and roaming around. They've become pretty cunning and clever and are known to steal peoples' belongings, jump on people and even bite. I didn't give them a chance - I wore long pants and my raincoat and locked my bag. I was sweltering but I didn't care! Claire, Michelle and myself were all pretty scared. It's not that I'm scared of monkeys themselves, it's just that these ones are so clever and know how to be cheeky. I didn't want them jumping on me. People kept saying how cute they were and I personally couldn't see it. This particular species to me look a bit feral and aggressive. The surroundings were beautiful though, but I felt pretty stressed out the whole time. Right at the end four monkeys surrounded myself and Claire and it was quite claustrophobic and scary!! Alas though, we survived. Some of the others let them climb on them and fed them bananas - crazy people!!! I took photos, that was good enough for me haha.
We walked to a market afterwards and had a look around. I bought an anklet and we watched many religious processions coming through playing music. Then we headed back to the hotel. It's not too hot here but it's SO humid. My top was absolutely soaked when we got back. Now we're having a rest and soon we will head out for dinner.
Love to all
Claire
