Resort day

Hi all,

Happy Mother's Day! I am so grateful every day to have Eliza, and to have my Mum. It's so celebrated here in Samoa that tomorrow is a public holiday.

Thankfully the weather was a lot better today, so we enjoyed a fun and relaxing day at the resort in some sunshine without crazy winds and rain.

Interestingly, because of the timezone here, Mum sort of has three birthdays. May 10th is her actual birthday, but then she told me she was born at 10pm pn the 10th in 1965, which in today’s Samoan timezone is 1am and hence the 11th of May. But back at the end of 2011, Samoa changed their timezone and switched to the other side of the international date line. Due to Australia and New Zealand being their main trade partners, they were finding being behind by a day was limiting the trade week to three days. So December 30th 2011 didn’t exist here, it was skipped over from December 29th straight to December 31st (too bad if your birthday was that day!). So technically in the year Mum was born at the time she was born, it was May 9th here. Basically we are just having a festival of Mum over here haha.

Eliza came in for a swim with us first thing today and then got tired. She’s still loving the swim canopy which is great. Rob and I took her to the room and she had a shower and then a decent sleep while Rob stayed with her. I went for a swim, did some reading and went kayaking with Dad. We saw some really colourful fish - purple ones, green ones, black and white ones, and even a couple of blue starfish. It was so calm, a real contrast from the winds and choppy waves of the last few days. It was nice to see the resort in a relaxed atmosphere with people chatting and swimming.

Eliza ended up being in the pool for about an hour and a half after her nap and absolutely loved it. She stayed in her canopy for ages playing with toys, and came for a swim with me carrying her too. She’s becoming more and more social all the time, waving, smiling and making “hello” type noises at everyone. She came back to the room with Rob and I for another sleep while Mum and Dad went and had a massage, and then we swapped over and Rob and I went while they walked Eliza around the island. Afterwards, we had dinner at the resort restaurant and enjoyed garlic bread and pizza. Eliza is getting two more teeth so has been a bit cranky today, and came back with me for one final nap during which she would only sleep over my shoulder, and if she wasn't, she screamed! Lucky she gives good cuddles.

Now we are watching North v Brisbane in Mum and Dad's room all together.

Love to all
Claire
