Seattle

Hello everyone, We were up fairly early this morning as we had to arrive at LAX at 7.50 for our 9.50am flight to Seattle. Rob will have you think that I only wanted to come here as it’s where one of my favourite TV shows, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, is set. But he is wrong! Grey’s may have brought my attention to this city, but talking to Nan and Pa about it and researching it is why I realised it seemed an interesting place to come. We landed on time and caught the light rail and then a bus to our hotel. The hotel is beautiful and is in a 105 year old building that previously served as a garage and training college for mechanics before being converted into apartments. Our room is huge with a massive bedroom, a walk in robe, bathroom and kitchen. It’s also very quiet which we are particularly happy about!! We didn’t get up to too much today as we arrived at our hotel around 2.30pm and we were tired. But we set off for the Space Needle this afternoon as it’s fairly near to our hotel. First we had a late lunch at a pie shop at the Seattle Centre which used to be an armoury for the National Guard in 1939 and was remodelled in 2012. The Space Needle is the icon of Seattle, and was built for the World’s Fair held here in 1962. It’s set in an area full of buildings and museums built for the fair. Amazingly, the Space Needle was built in just 400 days. The government wanted it to be space themed as the space race was happening at this time. The top part looks a bit like a space ship as a result, and is currently painted orange for the 60th anniversary last year as it was back when it opened (these days it’s usually white). The World’s Fair here ran from April 21 to October 21 of 1962, and on July 1 the Needle had already reached 1 million visitors. It houses the world’s first revolving restaurant, and today has the only revolving glass floor. We enjoyed the view, but it was very cold and windy outside! The outside part had a slanted glass fence you could lean back on which was scary. The revolving level was great as we could take in the view without having to move through people. We both agreed the design and advertising we saw at the exhibition reminded us of the theming of Tomorrowland at Disneyland. Once down, we went to the supermarket and stocked up on fruit and breakfast supplies. We are having a night in tonight and will have dinner in our room’s kitchen. Looking forward to exploring tomorrow on a walking tour! Love to all Claire Xoxox
