Brunch and Baltimore

Hello all!

Yesterday afternoon Maria and I relaxed for a while and watched some TV. Then we got ready and headed out for dinner in Georgetown. We went to a restaurant called 'Farmers Fishers Bakers' and had such a delicious meal! We shared some sushi, then a beautiful pizza, then honey baked fried chicken (yum! Not oily at all!). Finally for dessert we shared something called beignets (pronounced bean-yays) which was fried dough which we dipped in different sauces. The restaurant was lovely and the whole meal was beautiful. We also shared a bottle of wine.

Then we walked along the Georgetown Harbour for a bit and got an uber pool to a bar called Grand Central in an area called Adams Morgan. Here we met Maria's friend from high school, Debbie, and two of her friends from work. We had a couple of drinks and then headed home as we were pretty tired. Unfortunately at this point I had a pretty bad stomach ache, and a guy in our Uber pool threw up out of the window!! I had to sing and block my ears so I wouldn't feel sick too haha. I don't think we have Uber pool at home, it's basically the same function as Uber but it's cheaper and you pick up other people along the way. We had a good laugh with our first driver of the night who loved my accent and thought it was hilarious how I pronounced 'Nissan' (here they say "knee-saan" hahaha!). We then got into a funny discussion of other words I apparently say "wrong" - Hyundai, Adidas, Nike, squirrel etc...

We got home and went to sleep. This morning we had a bit of a sleep in and then went to a place called Lavagna in Eastern Market. We met Maria's friends Monica and Erica and had a lovely brunch. Maria and I shared chicken and waffles and some pancakes. I'm so happy my appetite has come back!! Her friends were lovely and we had a really good time.

We got back to the apartment, picked up Eric and the three of us headed to Baltimore which was a 50 minute drive away. All I knew about Baltimore was that 'Hairspray' was set there about segregation and racial issues in the 60s. We had a great afternoon despite the drizzly rain. We started off at the inner harbour where we shared a 'Five Guys' burger just so I could try one. Then we walked around some shops, saw the ships in the harbour and gasped at the cost of the aquarium ($40 USD - no thanks!).

We basically walked around and explored. We walked through Little Italy and ended up at a place called Fell's Point. Here there were cute little old buildings with shops and bars. We stopped at a pub called the 'Penny Black' and enjoyed a drink. I've had such an amazing time with Maria and Eric this week. Both of them are so kind and down to earth. I have felt so welcome and comfortable and I can never thank them enough for the hospitality they've given me. We had such a fun time chatting, laughing and just enjoying each others' company :)

We walked back towards the harbour and had dinner at a place called 'Phillips'. Maria and Eric wanted me to try the seafood that Baltimore is apparently famous for, so we shared a seafood platter and some clam chowder. We had prawns, scallops, crab cakes and more. It was absolutely delicious!!!

The drive home was pretty crazy, there were no lights along the freeway and it was pouring rain! On the way home, we stopped at the supermarket and now I'm just packing up my case ready to head to Ronald Reagan Airport tomorrow morning bright and early. I cannot believe I am already heading to LA to start the last week of my trip. Time is flying by so fast. I'm really excited for the week to come though - Hollywood boulevard, Universal Studios, Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm and Santa Monica. I went to California when I was 12 with my family and I'm pretty sure I'm going to be feeling very nostalgic this week - I hope Disneyland is just as good as I remember it being!!

Love to all and see you on the west coast,

Claire
