Rosenborg Slot, canal cruise, dinner with Nina

Hi all!

First of all some good news about uni which (unfortunately) starts next week. I got up at 2am because I'm a nerd to check the timetable I'd been given (it was 10am in Melbourne) and I got all the preferences I picked! Yay!!

We tried to sleep in a little today but as per usual we were woken by noise. I wake up here feeling like I'm suffocating due to how hot it is in the room. I can understand no air con, but having no fan is just awful. So the light and noise and heat got us again. Looking forward to hopefully some good nights of sleep in Dubai from tmro onwards.

Today our first stop was Rosenborg Palace, but as we were early due to waking up earlier than intended, we first went for a walk in the botanic gardens. They were quite pretty but didn't have anything on Melbourne's. My favourite part was running through the sprinklers like I was an excited 10 year old again hahaha. Mum looked at the greenhouse while I ran through the sprinklers. Then we walked back via the lake to the palace.

Rosenborg Palace or Castle was built as a spun try summerhouse by Christian IV in the 17th century. The palace was used as a royal residence until 1710, after which Christiansborg Palace and then Amalienborg Palace were used. We toured the three levels and then the treasury. We got so tired so early on today though due to heat and lack of decent sleep so walked around a bit like zombies. The palace was kind of ugly on the inside to be honest!!! Very dark and over the top furniture and yucky colour schemes. Sorry Christian IV - not a fan!!! The treasury had some cool crowns in it though.

We had a look at the pretty gardens and then walked to Nyhavn to do a one hour canal cruise. Our one hour canal cruise instead turned into a one and a half hour canal cruise though! We had sailed up the river to Holmen, where groups of people were sunbathing everywhere on all the islands. Then we arrived near the little mermaid statue and the boat stalled.....and then wouldn't start!! We had to sit in the baking sun and wait for another boat to come. Some impatient people demanded they get on another boat from the same company that was nearby and had some spare seats, but mum and I decided to wait it out. Our guide was really kind and doing all she could to keep everyone happy, and we weren't in any hurry. It turned out that being patient paid off. The people who swapped boats got on a really crowded boat, while a man came and fixed our boat in about ten minutes. Everyone who had waited cheered and clapped and we were on our way once again! And we had a half empty boat so we could all spread out and sit on the edge :) before that we had had a very full boat! We went through Christianshavn and the city. It was relaxing and nice to not have to walk but soooo hot!

Next we went to the oldest pub in Copenhagen called 'Hviids Vistue'. Mum had spotted a 'three open sandwiches + beer = 69 kr' special the other day. Open sandwiches are traditional Danish food and involve small rye bread with things on top. I had a ham one with some weird jelly, a salami one with curry sauce and another meat I didn't know. Mum had herring with onion, pate with beetroot and eggs and tomato. They were yum! We sat outside which was nice but it's a shame there was so much roadwork going on right next to us, a tractor even came past at one point! The metro is having 17 stations added to it so half the city is dug up. It was apparently meant to be finished in 2018 but now they're saying 2022 - I'll be 30!!!!! Haha.

Walked back to the room with an ice cream on the way and had a relax for two hours. Then we caught the blue line to Kildebakken to visit my friend Nina at her apartment! We found her place no problems and were treated to an amazing dinner she had made us. We made our own Danish open sandwiches using fish, salad, eggs and more. It was delicious! And then we dessert we had something a bit like a trifle that Nina's grandma makes for her. Nina made it for us and it was macaroons, pineapple, whipped cream, port wine and chocolate on top. It was yummmm!!! It was fantastic catching up with her, as I hadn't seen her since she departed our Asia tour in Hanoi in Vietnam. I have added some photos of me and her in Asia to the bottom of the blog. For those of you who are regular readers, Nina is the girl who was also very sick when I was in Cambodia, but she had to go to hospital as well. She was fine but we stuck together with our upset tummies!!!! She's a really kind person and very easy to get along with! Didn't want to leave but had to say bye as mum and I are both wrecked and needed to go home to bed. I'm sure we will cross paths somewhere in the world again though one day!

Tmro we leave for Dubai at 2.55pm Copenhagen time (10.55pm Melbourne time). Our flight takes a six and a bit hours and we will then be only six hours behind Melbourne. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little nervous about flying tmro in light of recents events. But I know I'm just being silly. It's just been playing on my mind a lot watching the news. All will be fine, especially as we will not be flying over the Ukraine now. There will most likely not be a blog up tmro as the day won't be very exciting and just spent on a plane! Wifi at out Dubai hotel costs $29 per day (what a rip!!!!) so we are going to try and find an alternative like a cafe of something. The blog will be up for Thursday 24/7, I promise! I'll find a way.

Feeling sad about leaving Denmark and Copenhagen as I have loved this beautiful country so much, and even though we have two days in Dubai it already feels like I have to go back home to boring work and uni. But alas there is one more adventure to come!

Stay tuned for sneak eating during Ramadan, sand dining in a 4WD, a day at a huge water park and a trip up the tallest building in the world. Wish us luck sleeping tonight, have resorted to wetting towels again like I did in Krakow and laying them over us!!!

See you in the United Arab Emirates!

Love to all
Claire
